Chapter Nineteen

Snowball sat on my lap. It made me so uncomfortable. There was plenty of space in the back of the SUV Elyssa drove, but she insisted on being on my lap. I felt her nervousness. She hadn’t been this edgy in Hell, but suddenly, Elyssa made her uncomfortable?

“What exactly did the three say?” I asked as she drove us back to the city, to Miriam Jones’s house. The sun had barely risen half an hour ago, but considering the gravity of the situation, I’d say waking her up early was a small sacrifice.

“Not much,” Elyssa said. “They’re at the Alliance. They’re going to want to talk to you when we get there.”

I looked out the window to my side. The three were the leaders of the Witch Alliance, some of the most powerful beings in the world. Even the master alpha didn’t have as much power as them. Miriam Jones had been one of them, too, before whatever spell she’d done had backfired on her and had made her go a bit coo-coo. Just my luck that it had to be her who knew Bellsy.

“How many witches do you have who can fight?” Lexar asked from my other side. He’d insisted he stayed close to me in the back, while Chelsea rode shotgun. She hadn’t said a single word since we drove away from the Farm.

“It’s hard to say now that we’re having…trouble with spellcasting,” Elyssa said. She drove far too slowly for my liking. We should have been there by now.

“He planned for this.” All this time, he’d seen ahead like I couldn’t. I should have planned for this, too.

“We’re working on a counter spell, but it’s difficult to do when we don’t understand the spell that was cast on us in the first place,” Elyssa said.

“How did he get to everyone, though?” Lexar wondered. Did it even matter?

“We’re not sure, but our best bet is food or drinks. Or both,” Elyssa said.

“So, he’s been at the Alliance, too.” Not that it surprised me.

Elyssa nodded. “We’ve found the witches responsible.”

“And?” Chelsea asked.

“They’re being punished.” It didn’t sound like those witches were having a good time right now.

“It’s strange that that wizard who came to Arthur’s house wasn’t related to them.” It had been bugging me since Elyssa told me. Why else would a wizard be in that house, if not to make sure that I had been spelled, too?

“He must have been,” Lexar said, but Elyssa shook her head.

“Not according to the witches we caught.”

“You think they were telling the truth?” Because I highly doubted it. You can’t trust a traitor, no matter how hard their punishment is.

“Absolutely. It wasn’t their choice,” Elyssa said. “They were spelled to answer any question with the truth. It’s against the law, but the three allowed it because none of them would admit to anything otherwise.”

I nodded as if I understood, but even though I could do a few spells now, I still had no clue how witch magic really worked.

“Why did they do it? What did he promise them?” Chelsea asked.
